The Hive Renovation

Mont Blanc views as the chimney comes down at The Hive

The chimney has come down at the renovation of The Hive in Les Gets. The huge chimney which measures more than 2×2.7m was one of the features which attracted us to the barn when we first saw it. A local architect who looked around when we were first viewing the property literally stood staring in awe at the structure. Apparently not many of these original chimneys have survived, being entirely made out of wood!

The plan is for us to take it down, and re-build it at the front of the barn central to the lounge to be a real feature in the open space. Where it was, it was going to interfere with the third floor, and possibly end up being a bit tucked away.

Here are some pictures of what it looked like to start with:

…and the beginnings of it being taken down:

It was used most recently by the previous owners to smoke ham. Each piece of wood had to be taken down carefully and numbered in order for it to be re-built.

Getting up on the roof, we found that you can infact see Mont Blanc!! unfortunately not in these pictures, so you’ll have to take our word for it 😉

Tune in next time for the next developments.

Thanks for taking the time to read!
